The Journey
Bergen waits at the start of it, tucked among its seven hills. The old wooden wharf of Bryggen leans its red and gold façades over the water, and a funicular lifts you up above the town to where the fjords begin their long, dark drift into the distance. A maritime, misty, gently weather-beaten beginning.
Onward by rail, the famous Flåm line dropping through plunging valleys and past waterfalls that fall in long silver threads, to a single village at the head of a fjord. From there a boat carries you out into the Nærøyfjord, where the cliffs lean in close, the water barely moves, and silence is the only sound that fits.
The journey ends in the Geirangerfjord, one of the deepest beauties the world has to offer. The Seven Sisters fall in thin bright threads down the cliff, abandoned farms cling to ledges no sensible person would build on, and the boat drifts through water so still it holds the mountains like a mirror.
