Peru's sophisticated coastal capital, the Incan heartland of Cusco high in the Andes, and the breathtaking citadel of Machu Picchu — a journey through one of history's greatest civilisations.
The Capital
Peru's sophisticated coastal city — Miraflores' clifftop parks above the Pacific, the UNESCO-listed Baroque churches of the historic centre, and the finest ceviche you will ever eat
The Incan Heartland
The former capital of the Inca Empire sits at 3,400m in the Andes. The Sacred Valley stretches below with Inca terracing, traditional markets and the fortress of Ollantaytambo
The Lost City
The 15th-century Inca citadel perched between two mountain peaks, clouds drifting through the ruins at dawn — one of the most extraordinary places on the surface of the earth
Peru is one of the world's great travel destinations — a country of astonishing contrasts where an ultra-modern culinary capital on the Pacific gives way to cloud forest, high Andean plateau and some of the most impressive ruins on earth. The journey from Lima to Machu Picchu is one of civilisation's great pilgrimages.
We include acclimatisation time in Cusco and the Sacred Valley to ensure altitude doesn't interrupt your experience. The Vistadome train through the Urubamba Gorge to Aguas Calientes, a private dawn entry to Machu Picchu — these are the details that make the difference between a trip and a journey of a lifetime.

Lima opens the journey, sophisticated and pale above the Pacific, where the pre-Columbian past sits comfortably beside one of South America's great kitchens. The clifftop district of Miraflores looks out over the sea, the colonial Plaza Mayor holds its old dignity, and the museums lay out the country's deep, layered history like a kind of overture.
Inward and upward the road climbs to Cusco, the old Inca capital, where Spanish cathedrals were raised on the stones of temples and the thin air turns the light to crystal. Out in the Sacred Valley the salt terraces blaze white in the sun, markets spill their colour, and ruined fortresses cling to the hillsides, remnants of a people who shaped an empire from rock.
The journey culminates at Machu Picchu, the hidden citadel among the peaks, reached at last by rail and river. When the dawn mist lifts off the terraces and the sun finds the old stones, the whole lost city seems to wake and remember. It is one of history's great civilisations, held in one of its most extraordinary settings, and it asks for silence.
