New Zealand's adventure capital sets the pulse racing before the journey south to Fiordland's ancient wilderness and the sublime, mist-draped majesty of Milford Sound.
The Adventure Capital
Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the Remarkables mountain range — bungee jumping, jet boating, world-class skiing and some of the Southern Hemisphere's finest restaurants
The Alpine Lake
Queenstown's quieter, more contemplative neighbour — a turquoise glacial lake reflecting snow-capped peaks, gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and some of NZ's best hiking
The Ancient Wilderness
Twelve million acres of World Heritage wilderness. Milford Sound — Rudyard Kipling's eighth wonder of the world — where waterfalls tumble from sheer cliffs into the dark green water
New Zealand's South Island is one of the most dramatically beautiful places on earth. In ten days you can ski in the morning and bungee jump in the afternoon in Queenstown, walk through beech forest to a glacial lake in Wanaka, and cruise beneath the kilometre-high cliffs of Milford Sound as waterfalls cascade around you — all in one extraordinary island.
This itinerary combines the adrenaline and sophistication of Queenstown with the serene beauty of Wanaka and the humbling, ancient grandeur of Fiordland. The drive along the Milford Road through Homer Tunnel is one of the world's great road journeys. New Zealand rewards the curious traveller at every turn.

Queenstown begins it, tucked on the edge of a lake the colour of metal, with the jagged Remarkables rising sharp against the sky. Here you choose your own tempo, the thrill of jet boat and bungee for the bold, the long vineyard lunch and the lakeside walk for the calm, with the Southern Alps always somewhere in the corner of your eye.
Southward the road empties into Fiordland, one of the last great wildernesses, where beech forest clings to sheer walls of granite and the rain only deepens the green. The drive to Milford is a journey in itself, through the dark of the Homer Tunnel, past mirror lakes and hanging valleys, until the land simply falls away into the sound.
The journey ends where the sound opens to the sea. Waterfalls fall a thousand feet down the cliffs in the mist, dolphins break the surface in the wake of the boat, and the scale of it all, the rock and the water and the silence, settles somewhere behind the ribs. Ancient, immense, and almost impossible to leave behind.
