The Journey
San José begins it, a green and temperate plateau at the country's heart, a brief and useful entry before the wild takes over. The National Theatre holds its faded grandeur, the coffee estates drape the surrounding hills, and the air carries the first hint of the tropics you are about to fall into.
Onward to Arenal, where the great volcanic cone rises over cloud forest and pools of warm thermal water. Days weave between hanging bridges slung through the canopy, hikes to waterfalls that crash into green pools, and evenings spent steaming quietly beneath the stars. The highlands here feel alive and gently volatile, in the best possible way.
The road ends at the Pacific, in the small national park of Manuel Antonio, where the rainforest runs right down to the sand and capuchin monkeys move through the branches overhead.
